Ian Teh_ photographed “Traces: From the Frontlines of Climate Change Along China’s Yellow River” as a 2014 Abigail Cohen Fellow in Documentary Photography. In removing “man” from the land, if only for an instant, he has struck a quiet blow in favor of the China it aspires to be. Teh has chosen to depict the world’s most populous country as devoid of people. The Chinese describe that as renzhi_-_“rule by man”-the invidious real-world substitute for the elusive “rule of law” that they have sought, for so long, to create. In practice, those rules are often ignored, because of corruption, cronyism, and abuses of power. One of the contradictions in China today is that, on paper, the government has a raft of stringent environmental regulations, intended to protect the air, water, and soil. ![]() This series is an alarm, an announcement of terrible beauty, heralding the advancing threat that we pose to our planet. It might be tempting to see Teh’s work as a retreat from our moment, a search for timelessness. In a country that is clamoring to get ahead (the first foreign advertisement in the Chinese press after the Cultural Revolution was for a wristwatch), these are images with no markers of fashion, no slogans or brand names to signify when they were made. Amid the throbbing of construction cranes and car horns and the bleating of cell phones, his work reminds us of a haunting silence. In the age of the selfie, Teh has returned to the classical monumental landscape. To those who know what they are seeing, these are images of protest. At Ngoring Lake, in China's western Qinghai province, he captures a moment of stillness and reflection, a perfect horizon-which is undermined by the discovery that the water level in the lake is rising because of melting permafrost and increased rainfall and snowfall due to climate change. There is, often, a harsh dissonance between the images and their captions. The farther Teh has ascended into the hills, the more fundamental his critique has become, even as his images have grown deceptively more serene. (Teh is one of two inaugural Abigail Cohen Fellows in Documentary Photography, a fellowship organized by the Asia Society and Magnum Foundation.) Eventually, he went to the origins, to the river’s source, depicted in his latest work here and in an exhibit, “Traces: Navigating the Frontline of Climate Change,” on view at Photoville, in Brooklyn. He travelled along the Yellow River, “the soul of a nation,” as he called it, which was running so low that, in 1997, it failed for the first time to reach the sea. He found a new visual register (a nearly perfect inverse of the world he had once documented)-a China of subtle grays and pale chemical yellows, and sweeping, battered landscapes. The color calmed down, the movement slowed. He was looking, he told me, for a way to capture “the price we ultimately pay or will eventually pay for our collective ambitions.” He left the industrialized eastern third of the country and ventured out to the places where people were trying to reëngineer their land in service of a new life: the construction sites and power plants and slag heaps. The more he travelled, the less he sought to focus on the individuals swept up in the country's transformations. In the years since then, Ian Teh’s images of China have changed. ![]()

![]() ![]() Until next time, this is your CEO and owner of John Jerva signing off from the 2023 Boston Fan Expo and hopefully next year, I’ll make my debut in Florida with more fandom and Intel. I’m sure Florida will have some rad Cons to probe in the future but for now, I’ll treasure this last trip to the Fan Expo and all the awesome fandom it entails! Comic Book Fandom on Full Display! Of course, there were super heroes galore everywhere you turned and as I plan to move to Florida next month, I said goodbye to Boston and the Fan Expo so iwas rather bittersweet. Myself and my daughter Sam taking in the Star Wars Booth!!! The Con floor was filled with droids who were running around like they owned the place and seeing R2-D2 cruise around was a treat worth the price of admission alone for this super geek who was there on opening day back in 1977. Star Wars was well represented at Boston and we were able to take pictures with a few familiar characters including Boba Fett and Darth Vader himself. Photos from celebrity panels including William Shatner, Stephen Amell, Emily Swallow and David Ramsey! Each star was awesome to listen to and it’s always a blast to be so close to those you normally only see on the big screen or TV. Zachary Levi was the best as he rode the line of what he could and couldn’t say and was hilarious with anecdotes aplenty. It was strange indeed as each star couldn’t mention or really talk about their movies or TV series due to the strike but they did their best to entertain those who came out to see them. ![]() I was able to record the full panels of all except Shatner but I did get an excerpt from his and you can see all of the full panels below courtesy of The Action Fix Live on the Action-Flix YouTube channel below! There was so much to see and do and we saw our fair share of celebrities including Shazam himself Zachary Levi, Arrow’s Stephen Amell and David Ramsey, the lovely Emily Swallow from The Mandalorian and SEAL Team as well as the icon himself William Shatner. Today, I went with my 15 year old daughter who has never been to one before and it was a treat to see how she reacted to the sights and sounds around her. It’s getting bigger every year and it’s attracting some of the best celebrities and comic book stars the industry has to offer. The Boston Fan Expo might not be as big as San Diego or New York but it’s perfect for those that are just starting out with Cons or those who want to enjoy fandom without a lot of the headaches. With today’s society being callous, politically correct and stuffy, Comic Cons are one of our last beacons of fun and friendship where nobody judges you and everyone is a friend connected by action, sci-fi and fantasy. This weekend saw the Boston Fan Expo in full gear and Saturday was a day to see celebrities and fandom galore. Today was a glorious day as I triumphantly made my return to a Comic Con after over four years. ![]() ![]() ![]() Campfires are first encountered during the very first mission within the game, when Goku and Gohan use the fire to cook the fish that they caught. For cognitive assessments, some patients might write down the words they have been asked to recall, thereby invalidating that aspect of memory testing. Not all families can support audiovisual assessment telephone assessment remains far more common. Telephone audio quality might be poor and patients being assessed might have hearing impairments. There are barriers to remote assessment, as family physicians have experienced during the pandemic. This means that the patient will need to access the test by printing it at home or receiving a copy in the mail. The authors of the MoCA have developed instructions on how to administer it virtually. When video equipment is available and of good quality, it is possible to complete full versions of tests like the MoCA and the MMSE 12 while observing patient responses. If caregivers can be present, virtual assessment can assess for further functional loss and development of concerning symptoms. Once dementia is diagnosed, monitoring for functional loss and development of challenging behaviour or safety issues is crucial. Family members often try to help loved ones during office assessments, and monitoring this remotely might be difficult.Īs with conventional testing, physicians need to interpret the findings in the context of the patient’s vision, hearing, education level, and daily function (activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living). The patient should participate without assistance, unless requested by the assessor. Therefore, we would recommend that when assessing an individual with visual impairments to conduct the cognitive test by re-scoring it without the visual components, e.g., the MoCA Blind, to magnify the visual components, or to substitue the visual component when possible using auditory alternatives, e.g., the oral trail making task. The environment for virtual care should be quiet and private. However, it appears that older adults with actual visual impairments may have developed compensatory strategies to adapt to this loss in visual acuity as there were no significant differences in scores of older adults with and without visual impairments. The MoCA scores in older adults with normal vision (M=27.32, SD =2.41) and with visual impairment (M=26.68, SD =2.52), did not differ significantly (t36=−0.787, P=0.436, d=0.26, BF10 =0.4).Ĭonclusions: Our findings show that simulated reductions in visual acuity and contrast sensitivity lead to lower scores on measures of cognitive ability, specifically the MoCA. Results: Acuity of participants at 20/20 (M=0.06 LogMAR, SD =0.1), simulated 20/80 (M=0.63, SD =0.18) and simulated 20/200 (M=0.88, SD =0.19) showed that the participants experienced simulated acuity loss with the goggles. For comparison, we included MoCA data from a sample of older adults with normal vision (n=19, Mage =74, Acuity M=0.04 logMAR, SD=0.16) or visual impairment (n=19, Mage =79, Acuity M=0.35 logMAR, SD=0.3). ![]() Only participants that scored >26 (i.e., normal cognitive function) at 20/20 were included in the analysis. The MoCA was administered following the clinical protocols. Methods: Participants (n=19) completed one of the three version of the MoCA under three conditions (20/20, simulated 20/80, simulated 20/200). Therefore we simulated visual impairments, i.e., reduced visual acuity and contrast sensitivity, in young healthy adults to determine how this impacts their scores on a measure of cognitive ability, i.e., the MoCA. But it is not clear if lowers scores on cognitive assessments are due to the assessments relying on visual stimuli, or if individuals with visual impairments are actually more likely to have cognitive impairments. I was sort of under the impression that dynamesh was the Zbrush equivalent of Sculptris but it seems to be a fraction of the detail level of Sculptris. What is happening is that even with dynamesh set to 1024 it blurs everything to the point I may as well just start over (not happening GRIN!). What I’m trying to do is take things from Sculptris, turn them into Dynamesh and have them in Zbrush with Zbrush style polygons (Personally I like how Sculptris stuff looks in Zbrush but thats me). You can export the mesh to Blender and I imagine from there do some retopo but I've never tried that, just watched a few videos on it. Also you can reduce the number of triangles - jump into the wireframe mode and use the reduce tool to remove unwanted triangulation. If you want to sculpt something else though, you'll want to get Blender and build a shape and import it into Sculptris - I think it takes OBJs. From there you can begin to add and smooth parts of it until you start building a face. Scuptris uses an auto-tessellation algorithm so it'll continue to generate triangles on the fly as you sculpt so you never have to worry about it (that's the huge difference between Sculptris and Z-Brush, I believe, and why Pixelogic hired the programmer that made Sculptris).
